Happy Christmas / New Year

Happy Christmas 7S.

Hope you're having a good time. We are looking at SPACE next term. Have a look out of your bedroom window to do some research! Mars is closest to Earth at this time of year.

Have a look at the SUPERB NASA website on the links. See what stars are in the night sky.

For a bit of fun have a look at where Santa is on NORAD's website (NORAD is the North American Aerospace Defence Command centre - they track santa like a missile)

Cornish Past - Sources.

How can we find out about the past?
  • We can look at objects from the past.
  • We can read information.
  • Look at pictures.
  • Visit places.
One great way of finding out about history is to speak to people.

Your independent learning task is this:

Interview one person who has lived in Cornwall for more than 20 years. The following questions may be helpful:

  • Where - have you lived in Cornwall?
  • What changes have you noticed the most?
  • What things are better about living in Cornwall?
  • What things are not as good about life in Cornwall?
  • What are your favourite memories about living in Cornwall?
We will report back to each other in the last week of term.

Pointers:
  1. Ask your parents to help you find a contact - do not just speak to someone without letting your parents know.
  2. Remember to use your listening skills.
  3. Write the questions you wish to ask before interviewing the person (even if it is a relative).
  4. You may find it helpful to make a few notes.

While you are here, why not check out some further information about Cornwall's fantastic mining history?

The story of Cornish Mining: http://www.cornish-mining.org.uk/story/story.htm
Places to visit to support your learning:http://www.cornish-mining.org.uk/activities/activities.htm

Methodism in Cornwall: http://www.cornish-mining.org.uk/story/religion.htm
(this one is heavy going)

Why not leave a comment and tell us your own fondest memory of your time in Cornwall (I've left mine).

You Survived Your First Half Term!

Well done 7S. You made it. On the way you have learned about:
  • Climates
  • Map work
  • The Buddha
  • Castles
You have also developed some really important skills to help you survive as a learner:
  • Effective listening
  • Making decisions (Thinking Hats)
  • Organising information (mind maps)
  • Researching
  • Communicating
Good job! Don't forget to use the links on the right to brush up on some of these skills (The mapzone website is great fun for developing your map skills).

Next we are looking at Cornish Past. What would you like to know more about? Competition time! Who can come up with the most interesting question(s) about the past in Cornwall. Don't forget to leave your name.

What kind of person do you want to be?

First of all - good work on learning how to create mindmaps. You can look at more mindmaps on the links section of this page. It takes you to a site by Tony Buzan - the man who created mindmapping.

If you want to find out more about the life of Siddartha Gotama (The Buddha) have a look at this site; it's a cartoon strip telling his story.

http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/buddhism/001bio.htm

Sometimes there are things we can learn from other people's beliefs even if we don't share their beliefs. Many Buddhists want to become like the Buddha so they remind themselves of what he did in his life and the qualities he showed.

What kind of person do you want to be? Try this exercise. Imagine it is your 80th Birthday party. All your friends and family are there and they are looking back on your life. What things do you hope they are saying about you?

I've left a comment so that you have an idea.

Happy Blogging.

SURVIVAL

Some really nice comments about Tehidy 7S.

In the coming weeks this is what you have in store:
- Building a contour model of your island.
- The life of The Buddha (is being happy part of "survival?")
- Castles (where to place them, how to defend them and how to attack them).
- Your presentations. Your reading on the topic of survival.

Your homework this week:

As a class we are going to write to classes of students in Kenya and possibly South Africa fairly regularly. We will learn from each other about what it is like to live and learn in different parts of the world.

Homework:

Write a letter about yourself. You might want to use this frame to help you...

Dear friend

My name is...
I am __ years old.
I live in... (describe what it is like where we live, the weather, the coast, wildlife, housing etc...)

I go to Redruth school. My favourite subjects are... (explain what you study and why you like it).

In my spare time I like to...

You may want to include a picture of yourself or something you are interested in.

Yours faithfully

We will post these letters from school. They are to be given to Mr Beech on Monday 8th October.

SURVIVAL at Tehidy Country Park

Welcome to blogging 7S.

This is your area only. This is where we can record our thoughts and find links to great stuff on the internet that will help us in our fantastic journey of learning about this amazing world and the people in it (including you).

A couple of blogging rules:
  1. We say nice things about people in public...but no nasty comments.
  2. We only enter comments using our own names.

Why not add a comment on your thoughts about Tehidy? What did you like? What did you learn? What was frustrating (not WHO was frustrating)?

Happy Blogging.
